We discriminate against people to the degree we fail to distinguish between them. Irving J. Lee
Learn and teach necessary but often neglected language-behaviors ...
- How well do you differentiate, and integrate, the world of words vs. the world that's not-words?
- Do you recognize similarities among differences ... and differences among similarities?
- Do you understand the difference between "what happens" ... and your reactions to "what happens"?
- Do your language-behaviors make sense ... how do you know?
- Who rules your symbols?
This work applies to anyone who's interested in learning more appropriate and productive language-behaviors. Based on interdisciplinary methodologies that have been taught for over 70 years, I apply it in a class I teach as an adjunct professor at TCU, General Semantics (GS) for Mass Communication Practitioners. Since 1993, I've developed ways of learning, applying, and teaching these methodologies that are current and related to 'real world' events and situations. As GS deals with the physiological and cognitive processes by which we perceive, construct, evaluate, and respond to our life experiences, it has general applicability across professions, languages, and cultures. I hope you'll find something of value in learning about, and perhaps teaching, the materials found here. Steve Stockdale
